What Should I Stay Away From When I'm Sick?
Oftentimes, when we feel under the weather, we reach for what gives us the most comfort. For some, it may be comfort foods. For others, it may be superhero movies or romantic comedies.
Frankly, we’d definitely recommend turning on You’ve Got Mail if you’re feeling rough, but you might want to think twice about those unhealthy comfort foods. Why, you ask? Read on as our team at AFC Urgent Care Smyrna explains.
Why Should I Avoid Comfort Foods?
Sadly, comfort foods only feel mentally comforting. Because of the general high amounts of calories, sodium and processed ingredients that comfort foods possess, they aren’t the best for your body when you’re trying to recover.
Although they aren’t as exciting, it is truly better to stick to fresh fruits and veggies and plenty of water when you are sick. These will be most effective at giving your body what it needs.
Foods to Eat Instead
- Homemade chicken soup
- Garlic
- Herbal tea
- Ginger
- Spicy foods
- Bananas
- Oatmeal
- Greek yogurt
Are There Any Activities I Should Be Avoiding?
Generally, we’d encourage you to avoid anything that doesn’t promote rest. So, if you’re like most of us, this would mean avoiding going to work, running errands and even talking to people with whom you have a complicated relationship with.
Allowing your body and mind to rest is instrumental in feeling better. If you find that staying up late watching one of your favorite movies or TV shows helps you sleep well through the night and into the day, then do that. Just make sure you are evaluating how your body and mind feel when choosing to do an activity.
How to Keep Those Around You Healthy When You Are Sick
- Avoid leaving the house until you are feeling better.
- Social distance as much as you can.
- Wash your hands with soap and water often for at least 20 seconds at a time.
- Avoid touching your face or nose with unwashed hands.
- Cough into your elbow or a tissue.
- Wear a face mask if spending time outside the home.
