Do I Need a Flu Shot This Fall?

Did you know? The flu virus is quite common, affecting between 9 and 45 million of us each year since 2010, the CDC estimates. For many of us, the flu just means a couple of days in bed with soup and our favorite show.

For others, though, the flu can lead to hospitalization or even death. That’s why we’re urged to get a flu shot every year.

Our team at AFC Urgent Care Smyrna would like to share some information about why flu shots are especially important this year.

Why Do I Need a Flu Shot?

If you are elderly, or have a chronic condition such as asthma, heart disease or diabetes, you’re at a higher risk for serious illness or hospitalization from the flu. Even the healthiest of us might like to be spared a few days of feeling wretched.

However, when we get a flu shot, it doesn’t just help us. It prevents us from spreading the flu to other people, including those who can’t get the vaccine.

People With Elevated Need for Flu Vaccination

  • People older than 65
  • People who are pregnant
  • Children older than 6 months
  • People with chronic medical conditions

Will Getting a Flu Shot Put Me at Risk for COVID-19?

With the pandemic in full swing, some people are hesitant to visit healthcare providers. But this year it’s especially important to get a flu vaccination.

Because the flu and COVID-19 share some symptoms, such as body aches, fevers and chills, people could confuse the flu with COVID-19. This could cause stress on healthcare systems (and patients) as providers try to sort things out. Plus, extra people visiting emergency settings this year could strain healthcare resources.
